ETHICAL BEEKEEPING

Welcome to Unspun Honey! We are a small, apicentric apiary in Mount Gambier, South Australia.  I raise my bees in warré hives using organic best-practices with minimal disturbance throughout the year, and keep honey from each hive separate from the others.  It takes more than 24h to harvest, crush and jar honey from each hive, without electricity, heat, pumps or plastic.

Our honey is for your inner child: for eating, guilt-free, by the spoonful, or for drizzling over a desert.  It's for sneaking a bite when your kids backs are turned, because they'll eat it all if they find out you have the jar out.  Crushed-comb honey has six times more pollen, twice the micronutrients, and three times more flavonoids than spun honey.  Crushed comb honey from warré hives, like ours, can have up to a hundred thousand times more, and may be as antibacterial as Manuka thanks to the high flavonoid density (ours is currently being lab-evaluated).

This is raw, wild honey as it was meant to taste.  This is honey with a conscience!

Custom-Made Warre Hives

Sometimes I have the time to actually make extra hive equipment.  All the wood I use is locally sourced, sustainably harvested cypress, or reclaimed high-quality timber, and I love cutting dovetails.  It's pretty rare that I have my own woodware on offer - your best bet to get ahold of some is to call me in early spring, before I fully realize how much I'll need for my own operations.

Single-Hive Wild Honey

All my honey is hand-pressed at room temperature in a stainless-steel hand press, directly into glass containers to preserve the natural flavour and beneficial properties attributed to wild honey.  Each batch of honey is unique to the location of the hive and the season, and no two batches are the same.  All of my honey is multifloral.

Bee Rescue

Sometimes bees will make poor or desperate living choices, so I do live bee removal.  I'll get them out of wheelie bins, old walls, or anywhere that you don't mind me "opening up".  I use a thermal camera to assess hives behind barriers.  Call for a price quote.
